Does acupuncture hurt?Fear of needles is quite common as most people are used to large hypodermic needles. Acupuncture uses needles that are very fine and solid (as opposed to the hollow tube of hypodermic needles). Typically needles are inserted into the skin with little or no discomfort, then disposed of after a single use. At times a patient may feel different sensations, including warmth, tingling, or a dull, achy feeling. These feelings are generally brief and subside within a few seconds. Patients generally find acupuncture treatments to be relaxing and rejuvenating.

What should I expect on my first visit? On your first appointment be sure to wear loose comfortable clothing. Your first appointment will last up to an hour and a half, with all subsequent visits lasting 45 minutes to 1 hour. The first half of the appointment will be a discussion about the main reasons for your visit and all things relating to your health history. Then we will take your pulse to help with diagnosis. We will end the session with an acupuncture treatment in which the needles are retained for about 25 minutes. There’s a heat lamp, soothing music, and dim lighting. During this relaxation period many patients fall asleep for a restorative power nap. The benefits of acupuncture start immediately. After their first treatment some people feel rejuvenated, more focused, less stress and a reduction in pain. Others report a sleepy or relaxed feeling after acupuncture. It’s not uncommon to feel sensations or aches at needle sites, or feel tired after the treatment. These are normal reactions and you can discuss them with your acupuncturist on your next visit.

Will I need more than one treatment? That is determined on a case by case basis. Most people experience improvement after their first visit. Acupuncture treatments build upon themselves so you will progress with consistent treatments, much like physical therapy or exercise. Frequency and consistency of treatment is very important to the improvement of your condition. Often times patients will continue to come in regularly for maintenance/wellness care even after their original issue has been resolved. Acupuncture can continue to provide the benefits of stress-relief, better sleep, improved focus, and increased energy levels.
